Notices and Reminders

'A friend is always loyal, and a brother is born to help in time of need' Proverbs 17.17.

OCCASIONAL DAY FRIDAY 27 (TOMORROW) - SCHOOL CLOSED

Worship
This week our whole school worships have been led by Mrs Cutler and Father Stuart exploring the theme of 'Knowing God's presence.' As this half term concludes, so does our focus on the value of Friendship. Next half term, worship will focus on the value of Respect, another of our core values.

This week in school
Music and sport have been the focus of learning this week. On Monday, one of the peripatetic music teachers played three pieces on the flute and piccolo for the children. They easily recognised the theme tune for Harry Potter. On Tuesday, we were visited by three members of the Gospel Touch choir. They led singing workshops for every class and we all came together at the end of the day to perform the songs we had learnt including: 'Lean on Me', 'Stand by Me' and 'Blinded by your Grace', as well as 'This little light of mine'. Wednesday and Thursday saw 'We will rock you' performed by the children playing instruments made out of a variety of recycled materials including traffic cones, bicycle wheels and bottle tops. These workshops were led by the Junk Orchestra. A very big thank you to the Friends of Thomas Coram for funding these activities for the children.

A group of Year 3 children participated in a tennis skills festival at Leverstock Green tennis club, whilst some of our Year 5 pupils played table tennis against Bishops Wood school. Our successful Year 5/6 dance group performed at Swing Gate Infant and Nursery school's Platinum Jubilee Street party.

Our Year 5 pupils, who are participating in the Archbishop of York's Young Leaders Award received a framed certificate of thanks from Berkhamsted Town Council along with 10 litter pickers in recognition of the letters written by the children offering ideas on how to improve the local area.

Queen's Jubilee
Although the Jubilee celebrations fall within the half term break, on Friday 10 June we are inviting the children to come to school dressed in red, white and blue. In the afternoon, there will be a special ceremony to plant four trees to mark this special occasion. We are also offering the children the opportunity to make and decorate a crown during the holidays; this can be brought into school on Friday 10 June, where a prize will be given for the 'best dressed' crown.

Vacancies
Victoria School has two great opportunities for those interested in joining its happy staff team: They are looking for a Teaching Assistant, to work 22.5 hours a week from 1 September. The hours would be spread across the week and spent in Reception and Year 1. They are also looking for a Learning Support Assistant, to work 20 hours a week supporting a child 1:1 in their Nursery, also from 1 September. Please visit teachinherts.com for more information and to apply. Alternatively, you can contact the school office from Monday 6 June. The closing date for both vacancies is Wednesday 15 June.

Step2Skill course - secondary transition
Step2Skill are offering two courses in June for parents of primary school leavers, to help understand the transition to secondary school level Maths and English. The courses are for parents of Year 5 and 6 pupils as they prepare to leave primary education.

  • Getting Ready for Maths at secondary school - a 5 week, online, live streamed course, starting on Tuesday 7 June, 10am-12pm.
  • Getting ready for English at secondary school - a 5 week, online, live streamed course starting on Tuesday 7 June, 1pm - 3pm.

Both courses will cover various topics within the curriculum and the strategies and methods used to teach your child. You'll discover activities each week that you can use to build your child's confidence as they make the transition to secondary level education. As a Hertfordshire resident, you can access this course for £15 and places can be booked here: https://www.hertfordshire.gov.uk/microsites/adult-learning/find-a-course/event-booking?service=eventHAFLS

Raise Resilience course
A quick reminder that the Bounce Raise Resilience course is on-line and fully funded by HCC. The course is 6 online session and has spaces available for the course starting Monday 13 June. For more information and to book your place click here.

Captain's Club
Captain's Club payments made by childcare vouchers will be added to Arbor accounts in the following month after month end reporting is completed.

Friends of Thomas Coram
Our Jubilee Party has now sold out! Apologies to those of you that have missed out.

Tickets for our Circus on Sunday 17 July will go on sale Monday 6 June. These are also limited and we expect these to sell out very quickly. Please, please do not delay in buying your ticket - we will not be able to extend the limit or issue any tickets once these are gone.

Details about Year 6 leaver hoodies have been emailed out and are now available on the website. Please follow ordering instructions carefully and ensure your child's name is correct (as shown in the image).

We hope you have a great half term.

Hair management
We encourage pupils to have their hair away from the face at all times so they can look smart in their uniform, reduce the risk of head lice and sporting accidents.

Attendance
We would like to ask parents to be honest with the school when reporting their child absent. We may not always be able to authorise requests for leave but we always appreciate parents being truthful about the reasons for a child's absence.

Stars of the week - back after half term.

This week at St Peter's

St Peter's 800th Celebratory Events June 2022
St Peter's church on the High Street (door opposite Fred & Ginger) is an historic 800 years old this year having been built in 1222! There are lots of events and activities happening to celebrate the anniversary. If you're looking for things to do during half term, do pop into the church and have a look around and view a historical display and screen animation by Berkhamsted Local History and Museum Society. Admission is free! The exhibition is on whilst the church is open 9-4pm.

Queen's Jubilee Service and Tea
St Peter's is holding a short service of thanksgiving to celebrate the Queen's 70 years on the throne on Sunday 5 June at 3pm. All welcome. The service will take place outside the church, weather permitting, and will be followed by tea and cake, by donation, a bell ringing peal and a magician in attendance! Everyone is warmly welcomed to attend, particularly if you have no street party of your own to go to. There will be some chairs but do bring a rug to sit on. We are also expecting a spectacular Spitfire to fly overhead at 3.20pm. The event will finish 5pm.
